Suitcase Essentials

So I think we're now officially into holiday season and we couldn't be more thrilled about it. Alie is currently on her way to beautiful Italy, while I have already indulged in a wonderfully chaotic family holiday to Whitstable.Packing is always a bit hit and miss with me I'm afraid, I generally pack everything or nothing and add children to that mix and the whole thing gets a little messy - on our recent trip I actually accidentally packed out dirty laundry bag!! This is my level of organisation! So I was pleased when Age UK contacted me with their Suitcase Essentials for travel. Here are some of their tips for cruise holidays:Cruise holidays have soared in popularity over the past few years. In 2014, more than 21 million people decided to go on a cruise and that number is predicted to grow in 2015[1]. With so many options these days, you’re certain to find the right route for your interests. If you have a cruise holiday booked, or are thinking of booking one soon, we’ve compiled an essential checklist to help you prepare. From the documents for your travels, to roaming charges for your mobile, we have covered it all. So all you have to do is look forward to enjoying the open waves.Tip 1 – Always keep important documents with youIt may seem obvious, but make sure you have passports, travel documents and ID’s with you at all times when on your cruise holiday. Travel insurance is another thing you shouldn’t leave without. And, if you’re holidaying with children or you’re over 65, travel insurance documents should always be carried on your person, for those ‘just in case’ moments.Tip 2 – Think about toiletriesCruise ships provide you with the basic necessities in your cabin, but it’s best to pack your own just in case. Remember, if you are flying to meet your ship, airlines do not allow liquids over 200ml in hand luggage. So pack shampoos and other toiletries that exceed this amount in your suitcase. If you usually use a hairdryer to style your hair, it’s worth taking your own as the one provided in your cabin may not meet your standards.Tip 3 – Think about your hand luggageIt’s a good idea to take a change of clothes in your hand luggage, along with any medication. If you’re flying to join your cruise, having a spare change of clothes guarantees you have something to change into if your bags are delayed.Tip 4 – Research the dress codesDress codes vary from cruise to cruise and can easily be researched online. The majority of cruise companies provide this information when you book or on their website. Make sure you check before you leave, so you have the right outfit for every occasion. Tip 5 – Pack lightWhile many of us can’t travel without packing almost every piece of clothing in our wardrobes, when it comes to travelling, less is more. Some routes now allow you to do your own laundry on-board, which is another great reason to pack light. Another option is to take advantage of the laundering service offered by your cruise line which is often free to top-tier passengers.Tip 6 – Buy aheadHave a think about the items that will be cheaper to take with you rather than buy on board. Painkillers, batteries, sunscreen and ear plugs are just a few that are usually more expensive on a cruise. If you have a smartphone, check roaming costs before you leave. Most providers now don’t charge extra for roaming in Europe, and also offer cheaper ‘add-on’ roaming packages for further afar. If you’re planning to use the internet while you’re away, check the internet usage rates with your cruise provider.Tip 7 – Save some roomDon’t pack your suitcase so it’s fit to burst before you’ve even left your house. You will no doubt be visiting some beautiful places on your travels, and find souvenirs and keepsakes to remind you of your trip, so it’s a good idea to think ahead and leave some room.Tip 8 – Extra storageA really useful tip from some experienced cruisers is to take an over-the-door shoe bag. This will come in useful for storing small items such as toiletries and chargers that might otherwise get lost. On longer cruises pack a few extra clothing hangers to ensure you have enough for all your shirts, trousers and eveningwear. For those planning on shopping a lot, a foldable duffle bag will give you extra luggage space. This can be packed in your suitcase on the outward journey, and then filled and checked in on the return leg.Wherever you’re sailing off to on your cruise, enjoy your holiday with the peace of mind that you have the right travel insurance for your trip. With our specialist cover and essential checklist, all you’ll have to worry about is choosing which books to relax with while you’re away. Here are a few floral travel essentials that we've spotted lately and would love to pack away for our next trip!Suitcase Essentials 1.
